Ethereum’s first zero-knowledge (ZK) rollup, zkSync Lite, will be retired in 2026, marking a milestone in the evolution of Layer‑2 scaling solutions.
Launched in June 2020, zkSync Lite enabled token transfers and NFT minting while reducing fees and network congestion, but it did not support smart contracts.
From Experiment to Evolution: Ethereum Layer‑2 Moves On
The shutdown follows a shift in focus to zkSync Era, a next-generation ZK-rollup that fully supports smart contracts and broader decentralized applications, announced ZKSync team on Sunday.

“ZKsync Lite was a ground breaking proof-of-concept and validated critical ideas related to building production ZK systems. It did its job: prove what’s possible and pave the way for the next generation,” zkSync wrote on X.
The team emphasized that nothing changes for users today, and no immediate action is needed. zkSync Lite remains fully operational, with user funds secure and withdrawals to Ethereum Layer‑1 continuing without interruption throughout the transition.
Launched in June 2020, zkSync Lite was an Ethereum Layer‑2 solution focused on payments. It enabled token transfers, atomic swaps, and NFT minting, but without smart contract support, which limited its functionality compared with subsequent rollup platforms.
Matter Labs, the team behind zkSync, paused active development on zkSync Lite in March 2023 following the launch of zkSync Era, a full-featured zkEVM designed to support arbitrary smart contracts.
Why This Matters
The shutdown of zkSync Lite shows that Ethereum’s Layer‑2 solutions are moving from early experiments to more advanced platforms that support smart contracts.

zkSync Lite (formerly zkSync 1.0) is Ethereum’s first zero-knowledge (ZK) rollup, launched in June 2020. It’s a Layer‑2 scaling solution focused on payments, token transfers, and NFT minting, but it does not support smart contracts.
A ZK-rollup bundles multiple transactions off-chain and posts a cryptographic proof to Ethereum, reducing fees and network congestion while maintaining security.
The system has served its purpose as a proof-of-concept. Development stopped in March 2023 after the launch of zkSync Era, a next-gen zkEVM that supports smart contracts and broader decentralized applications.
